Hair loss can affect just your scalp or your entire body. It can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or medications. Anyone can experience hair loss, but it’s more common in men.But just because thinning is natural doesn’t mean you have to accept it. Here are some solutions to help you keep the hair out of your brush and on your head.
1.Nutrition
While diet alone won’t save your hair, there may be some truth to the old adage that you are what you eat. “You’re not going to have the healthiest hair if you’re living off doughnutsOpens a New Window., because being nutrient-deficient weakens strands and makes them more prone to breakage,” says Denise Kernan, owner of DK Hair Techs, Inc., a member of the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery, and a hair transplant technician who has worked on everyone from senators to sports stars to actors to mafia guys (she won’t name names to protect the privacy of her clients).
2. Shampoo
Despite some of the claims, a shampoo or conditioner won’t be able to stop or slow hair loss, nor help with a receding hairline or thicken hair that’s becoming thinner. At best, a thickening shampoo will make hair temporarily thicker for a short period of time, but they certainly won’t help with hair loss or thinning.
3. Laser Light Therapy
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a low-level laser device as a treatment for hereditary hair loss in men and women. A few small studies have shown that it improves hair density. More studies are needed to show long-term effects.
4. Hair Replacement Surgery
Hair transplantation involves harvesting follicles from the back of the head that are DHT resistant and transplanting them to bald areas. A surgeon will remove minuscule plugs of skin that contain a few hairs and implant the plugs where the follicles are inactive. Around 15 percent of hairs emerge from the follicle as a single hair, and 15 percent grow in groups of four or five hairs.
At the end of the procedure, the person will still have the same amount of hair – it will just be distributed more evenly around the scalp. Treating hair loss through surgical procedure can be painful and expensive. There is also a risk of scarring and infection.
5. Propecia
Also known as Finasteride, it’s the only other FDA-approved medicine to treat hair loss. The drug was originally created to help prevent prostate cancerOpens a New Window., and works by blocking production of a male hormone in the scalp known as androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that shuts down follicles to cause male pattern baldness.
6. Minoxidi
This rejuvenates and increases the blood flow around shrunken hair follicles, causing them to increase in size and thicken. It also extends each follicle’s growth phase to encourage hair regrowth.
7.Hot oil massage
Lack of nutrition to the hair has been often a cause of excessive hair fall and hence hot oil massage can be very effective to control hair loss. Massage the scalp daily at least for a few minutes with lukewarm oil. You can use any oil that is rich in Vitamin E. Coconut oil, almond oil, mustard oil, olive oil and jojoba oil are the best options in your hand. If you are experiencing hair loss due to dandruff, jojooba oil can be particularly effective. You can also opt for a mixture of all the oils to get the best results. Heat the oil lightly with an iron or steel container and massage your scalp and hairs with the oil. To get the complete benefits of hot oil, massage it is best if you can leave the oil on your hairs overnight and then wash off in the morning, otherwise shampoo the hair after 1 hour.
